Hour of Code

West Jefferson Middle School celebrates Computer Science Education Week by participating in Hour of Code, an initiative to bring computer science to students. Under the guidance of pre-engineering and robotics teacher David Williams, students participate in activities during their math classes that ranged from an introduction to programming concepts to learning programming languages and building games and mobile applications.

Hour of Code 2015

On December 9, 2015, an audience of seventh and eighth grade students, administrators, and staff were joined by guests Shelley Goerdt, a district Career and Technical Education specialist, and Eric Halingstad, an engineering teacher at Conifer High School, to participate in a half hour video chat with Kevin Systrom, CEO of Instagram. Student Tucker Mihulka asked our school's question: "Why do you think it's important to learn code, even if you don't want to become a computer programmer?". Mr. Systrom discussed how math and coding have real-life applications and fielded questions from students at schools in Wisconsin, Alaska, Alabama, and California.
