Good afternoon, West Jeff Middle families. This is your Weekly Wednesday Update for January 12, 2022.

Upcoming Dates

School News

Please remind students to check the Lost and Found to see what may be theirs. It is growing again!


Our sixth and seventh grade digital citizenship learning in January will focus on media balance and well-being. Please refer to the family letter for additional information about ways families can assist their students in understanding this month's topics.

The voluntary, confidential survey will take 30 – 45 minutes. Please see our family letter and the Annual District Surveys page for additional information. Families that do not want their student to participate may contact the main office.


EnrollJeffco Round 1 enrollment is open January 10 through January 28, 2022. All families use EnrollJeffco to enroll their students in their neighborhood school or choice enroll at a different school. The time at which an application is submitted does not affect the priority for enrollment. All applications received before the close of Round 1 on January 28 will be included in the lottery process for the 2022-2023 school year.


There will be no school on Monday, January 17 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Classes will resume on Tuesday, January 18.


Illustration of three curved arrows creating a circle.Parent-teacher conferences will take place online on Thursday, January 20 from 3:30 pm – 7:30 pm. Conferences can be scheduled on the SignUpGenius for January 20. You may select your student's core teachers by subject area on the tabs at the top of the SignUpGenius page. Meetings are scheduled in 7-minute intervals with teachers. Please view the January 20 Online Conferences video for guidance on how to find your student's teachers and sign up for meetings with each teacher.


The next School Advisory Council meeting is Monday, February 14th at 2:35 pm at the school with a Zoom option. The meeting is open to interested adult attendees; the January minutes will be available shortly on the school website. For more information, please contact SACWJMS@gmail.com.


Families may provide proof of vaccination to the health room for students that have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. (Fully vaccinated means two weeks after the second dose in a two-dose series.) Students that are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 will not be considered a close contact and therefore not need to be quarantined in the event of an exposure at school.


Conifer High School Registration

Eighth grade students received high school registration information in their social studies classes earlier this week; Conifer High School counselors will review class selection with eighth grade students during homeroom next week on Tuesday, January 18 and Wednesday, January 19. Additional information may be found in the welcome letter from Conifer High School, at the Conifer High School Curriculum Showcase tonight, January 12, at 5:30 pm at the high school, and on the 2022-2023 Conifer High School Registration site.


Counseling News

Is your student struggling with test anxiety and/or school related anxiety? Ms. Shute will be hosting a weekly anxiety group for students interested in support. Please complete the parent/guardian permission form and return to Ms. Shute via email or return with your student at your earliest convenience. Please email or call Ms. Shute for additional information or questions.

One Foot In and One Foot Out: Managing Emotions When Emotions and Behaviors Get Big and Feel Out of Control on January 25 at 6 pm or January 26 at 10 am

Music Students in All-County Honor Ensembles

All-County Choir: Fletcher A., Mathias B., Marley B., Cara D., Aspen D., Waylon K., and Sarah S.;

All-County Band: Ella G., flute; Lucian J., alto saxophone; and Zac B., tuba;

All-County Orchestra: Henrik S., viola; and Rowan J., cello.

Tickets are available for purchase through Jeffco Music Festivals for the All-County Middle School Band and Orchestra concert on Friday, January 14 and the All-County Choir concert on Friday, April 8. Both concerts will be at Arvada High School. A livestream will be offered for the concerts. Any tickets purchased for the January 7 All-County Choir concert have been transferred to the April 8 date.

Colt Character Students of the Week

Each week, West Jeff Middle teachers and staff nominate students who have exhibited exemplary behaviors such as growth mindset, responsibility, integrity, or teamwork. Three nominated students are recognized during homeroom announcements and all students who have been nominated that week will be recognized in our weekly newsletter.

PTA News

The January PTA meeting is Tuesday, January 25 at 6:30 pm via Zoom. Please contact wjmspta@gmail.com for the Zoom link if you would like to attend.


Raise CrazeVolunteers are needed for our annual fundraiser coming up in February using Raise Craze, which is about fundraising through acts of kindness. Please email wjmspta@gmail.com to get added to the email communication with no obligation to commit.

Congratulations to 7th grader Abby Leidel, whose Film Production entry in the PTA Reflections art program was recognized with an Award of Excellence at the Jeffco level of judging. Abby's entry will advance to the state level of judging in January 2022. Way to go, Abby!

Community News

Jeffco Public Schools is hiring! There are available positions in many areas, including Food and Nutrition Services and School Age Enrichment (before and after school), for adults interested in working for Jeffco Public Schools. Learn more about available positions and apply online on the Jeffco Jobs Board at jeffcok12jobs.org.

Jeffco Public Schools will reimburse new and returning guest teachers (substitute teachers) for their CDE licensing and fingerprint fees. Daily rates of pay for guest teachers have also been increased for the 2021-22 school year.


Gifted and Talented Family Learning: Jeffco Gifted & Talented invites families for an evening of parent/family learning on a variety of topics on Wednesday, January 26 from 6 - 8 pm. A Zoom link will be emailed to all who RSVP by 3:00 pm on January 26. All sessions will be recorded and posted on our GT website the following week, so you may review sessions attended or engage in additional learning at your leisure.


Moana Jr. auditions with Evergreen Children's Chorale: Evergreen Children's Chorale is now accepting new members for Frozen Kids (2nd-4th grade) and Moana Jr. (5th-8th grade). Read-through and auditions will be held in January 2022, performances are in late April. Scholarships are available. We hope you can join us for this fun musical theater experience!


Resilience1220 Events: The next two events in the Conversations and Connections speaker series will be "Recognizing and Supporting Tweens and Teens with Disordered Eating" on Wednesday, January 19 at 7 pm, which will help caregivers understand the warning signs of disordered eating and what to do about it, and "Impacts of Chronic Ailments on Lifespan and Development" on Wednesday, February 16 at 7 pm, which will address living with chronic illnesses and ways to support loved ones dealing with chronic illness. Free registration is required to receive the Zoom link for each event.

The next Emotion Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) for Caregivers workshop will be held on Thursdays in February via Zoom. The workshop teaches adults emotion coaching skills to use with children to help grow their own ability to manage their feelings and behaviors. Free registration is required; a donation is suggested.


Conifer trails survey: The Conifer Area Council has sponsored a series of surveys since 2006 to inform county government officials about the needs and desires of our community. Their current survey seeks feedback about trail use and connections and takes approximately five minutes to complete. The survey will be open through the end of February 2022.
