School News

The window for families to request a change in their student's learning environment for second trimester, which begins on November 16, is open October 1-14. Families that would like to move their students from remote to hybrid or hybrid to remote are asked to complete the Learning Model Request 2nd Trimester form. If you do not wish to make any changes, then you do not need to complete the form.

There will be no school for students on Thursday, October 15 for staff development and Friday, October 16 for fall break. Classes resume as usual on Monday, October 19.

Online school photo orders for students in hybrid learning whose photos were taken on Monday and Tuesday may be placed through the end of the week. Afterward, a personalized access key will be sent home with picture delivery. Dorian Studios will return in early December to take photos for full-time remote students and retakes for students in hybrid learning.

The Pride Alliance will continue weekly virtual meetings on Thursday, October 22 from 2:30 - 3:00 pm. Students interested in joining the group's Google Classroom may contact Mrs. Escheman (Woods) at awoods@jeffcoschools.us. The Pride Alliance creates a safe space for students to share the message of community and acceptance for all people.

Office Reminders

2020-2021 student fees are ready for families to pay. You may pay online by going to Jeffco Connect, then Jeffco Student Fees. (Sixth grade families participating in the King Soopers Lab Card Program are asked to not pay for Outdoor Lab until your credit has been applied to your fee. The Lab Card Program will continue until December.) If you have any questions or concerns about student fees, please contact Debbie Jessee at Deborah.Jessee@jeffco.k12.co.us.

We are pleased to share that school meals will be free for the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year. It is important that students pre-order the breakfast and lunch for the week, even the morning of the day(s) they will be eating school meals. Our kitchen staff relies on the information from pre-orders to make enough meals to fulfill pre-orders and a few extra for students who forgot to order in advance. We are having days when we run out of lunches or are unable to fulfill students' preferred choice of lunch due to many more students requesting a lunch than the number of students that completed the pre-order form that week. To meet our goal to feed any students who would like a breakfast or lunch, it is helpful for the kitchen staff to know how many meals to prepare. Thank you for working with us to make sure our students have sustenance for learning!

While Fridays are all-remote learning days, students are expected to login to each of their Google Classrooms during their scheduled class times on Friday and complete the learning task assigned or they will be marked absent. Sometimes the learning task is to submit assignments for the week, complete a reflection form, or take a short quiz. Whatever the task, students are expected to attend online classes on Fridays if only to complete the assignment(s). Some students are assigned to meet with the teacher in a Google Meet during the class period for extra help or a re-teach. This should be communicated by the teacher to the student. Friday classes are shorter than a typical day, but Friday is an online learning day and students do need to attend.

Families that qualify for free and reduced price meal program benefits may opt in to other fee waivers that cover other items such as school fees. If you feel your household may qualify for that program and you have not signed up yet, please take the time to do so. Detailed directions are available at jeffcoschoolfood.org/free-reduced.

Colt Character Students of the Week

Each week West Jeff Middle teachers and staff will be nominating students who have exhibited exemplary behaviors such as growth mindset, responsibility, integrity, or teamwork. Each week during hybrid learning, three nominated students will be recognized during homeroom announcements and all students who have been nominated that week will be recognized in our weekly newsletter.

The following students were nominated for displaying Colt Character during the week of October 12: Rohith A., Charley B., Kaia C., Samuel J., and Mason R.. Congratulations!

PTA Reflections

Students are invited to submit their original artwork for the 2020-2021 PTA Reflections art program by November 2nd. This year's theme is "I Matter Because...". Entries in the categories of Literature, Photography, and Visual Arts are being accepted this year. Please visit the Reflections page on the PTA website for instructions on how to submit entries; be sure to check the rules and formatting instructions for your individual category.

Clash of the Classrooms

Our classrooms have an immediate need for technology to support teachers' delivery of virtual and in-person teaching, including spare power chargers for Chromebooks, video cables to use secondary displays, and audio accessories such as headsets and amplifiers. To help fund these needs, PTA is organizing a Clash of the Classrooms fundraiser where homeroom classes will compete to raise funds through donations from October 19 through November 13. Any funds left after meeting those needs will be used for other needs at our school.

Evergreen Orthodontic Specialists is sponsoring prizes of gift cards that will be awarded to the highest fundraising homeroom class in each grade for each week, the highest fundraising homeroom class overall, and the highest fundraising individual student overall. A gift card will also be awarded to the homeroom teacher whose class raises the highest value in donations.

More information will be relayed to families in the coming days via SchoolMessenger and posted on the Fundraising page on the school website.

Community Notification of Water Quality

On September 1, 2020, Jeffco Public Schools was notified by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment Water Quality Control Division that routine monitoring for the presence of drinking water contaminants showed that the water system that serves Conifer High School, West Jefferson Middle School, and West Jefferson Elementary School exceeds the maximum contaminant level (MCL) for Total Haloacetic Acids (HAA5).

Please refer to the public notification letter linked below for additional information on what that information means and what is being done to correct the situation.
