School News

Upcoming Events

There will be a 6th grade choir performance on Wednesday, October 30 at 6:30 pm in the cafetorium.

On Thursday, October 31st, all students will be invited to participate in the Monster Dash fun run. It is our primary fundraiser of the year, so families are encouraged to sign up for online fundraising. Fundraising participation tickets are being distributed in Advise for students to use to bid on gift cards and teacher experiences. Copies of all the event material may be found on the Fundraising page of our school website.

Our sixth grade students are going to Outdoor Lab during the week of November 4. If you have any questions, please reach out to your student's Advise or science teacher. This week's preparation reminders:

  • Please review the Outdoor Lab Packing List and the Day Pack Packing List. Students need to bring their packed day pack to school on November 1st!

  • Sixth grade students need to be dropped off at school on Monday, November 4, no earlier than 9:00 AM and picked up from the school on Friday, November 8, by 12:30 PM. Pickup time on Friday is subject to change depending on when students depart their Outdoor Lab school. They cannot ride their regular bus routes on Monday morning or Friday afternoon, so please make arrangements for transportation with their luggage if an adult family member is not available at those times.

  • Medications for Outdoor Lab:

    • A printed, completed medication form needs to accompany medication being set to Outdoor Lab.

    • Please send only the amount needed for the week of over-the-counter and prescription medication for your student.

    • Medication must be in the original containers, unexpired, and kept together in a zip-lock bag labeled with your student's name.

    • Prescription medications must have a prescription label with your student’s name. All inhalers must have a label with the child’s name, usually found on the box. If you no longer have the box, your pharmacy may agree to make a new label.

    • All essential oils must have instructions from a medical provider on when to use, how to use and how much to use.

    • Still have questions? We made a video with the district nurse covering more questions you may have!

Coffee with the Counselors

In November, we hope to kick off a monthly information session series, Coffee with the Counselors, where the counselors will present on a particular topic that may be beneficial to our families. Sessions are expected to be held monthly at the school and run from 7:30 - 8:30 am with time for further discussions and questions afterward. Adult family members are welcome to attend and light refreshments (coffee & donuts) will be served.

Please help launch the new program by filling out a brief survey to identify topics of interest. Official dates will be communicated via Weekly Wednesday Update.

Winter Weather Closure and Delay Procedures

When there is inclement weather, Jeffco Public Schools makes an open or closed decision as early as possible in order to accommodate transportation, services, and staff. Any closure or delayed start is publicly announced and families are notified directly by 6 am.

School closures are posted first on the district website, Twitter, and Facebook pages, then sent to Jeffco families via email, text, and phone using SchoolMessenger. Depending on your personal settings, you will receive an email, text message, and/or phone message.

In addition to direct messaging, media outlets are notified of cancellations and delays. News outlets, websites, and social media may have the information prior to direct notification to families and staff because we do not want to message families after 9 p.m. or earlier than 5:30 a.m.

Families can always make the decision to not send their children to school that day if they feel it is unsafe. Our schools are flexible with late arrivals and will always excuse a student absence when called in by a parent or guardian.

In the event of a 2-hour delay start, West Jeff Middle students that arrive during the delay start will be in the gym or cafeteria under the supervision of teachers/staff.

Halloween costume guidelines

Students are welcome to wear costumes on October 31st! If you wear a costume, please choose something that:

  • can be worn to school and be worn all day,

  • minimizes the use of face paint/makeup so the student remains recognizable,

  • meets the school dress code, and

  • permits the wearer to sit and participate in the learning process throughout the day.

If you have PE, please wear or bring shoes appropriate to wear in PE.

Costumes worn to school should not:

  • distract from learning, either yours or others';

  • completely hide the identity of the student, i.e. gorilla suit, Scream Ghostface masks;

  • include masks, sound effects, lights or other components that may disrupt the learning environment;

  • include toy or facsimile weapons (swords, guns, knives, etc.);

  • be demeaning to any ethnic group, race, religion, nationality, disabilities, gender or gender identity (boys as girls and vice versa), sexual orientation, or individual (staff or student) at the school;

  • include props or equipment that are unsafe;

  • impair a student's vision or movement; or

  • show obscene materials, threats, or prohibited substances.

Students whose costumes do not meet the standards will be required to change their clothes.

If you have questions about Halloween costumes at school, please contact Mr. Squires at Justin.Squires@jeffco.k12.co.us or 303-982-8381.
