Upcoming Events

Picture Day is this Friday, August 23rd. Lifetouch will photograph every student and staff member for the yearbook. (Retakes will be on October 23rd.) You may order photos ahead of time on mylifetouch.com with Picture Day ID CG899342Y0.

Join over 300 visitors from our community and area elementary schools for quick, easy, and fun science experiments and experiences set up at staffed tables in our cafeteria and on our playing field for scientists of all ages to choose to participate in on a drop-in basis at Science/STEM Night on Wednesday, September 4, 2019. If you would like to donate materials or volunteer to staff a station, please visit our Science Night 2019 Sign-Up Genius.

Our students will begin MAP testing the week of August 26th. Measures of Academic Progress, abbreviated as MAP, is given three times a year. The testing gives immediate feedback on students' growth to help guide teacher instruction.

MAP math testing will be done during math classes the week of August 26th. MAP reading testing will be done during ELA classes the week of September 3rd, following the Labor Day holiday. Bell schedules are not impacted during this time.

Please be sure to avoid making appointments for your students during their testing times and encourage them to get a good night's sleep and a healthy breakfast prior to their tests.

Please contact Tricia Samuelson or Caity Mergendahl if you have any questions about MAP testing.

"Away for the Day" Personal Device Policy Success!

Our administration and staff would like to celebrate the students for doing a great job of following our new Personal Device Policy. Students have demonstrated a higher level of engagement in their learning activities and the number of discipline incidents has significantly decreased. Way to go Colts!

Smartphones, smartwatches, and tablets are to be kept in a student’s locker during the entire school day or, at minimum, turned off and out of sight in a student’s pocket from 7:30 - 2:20. This includes lunch, recess and hallways.

Therapy and Service Dogs

Archie the therapy dogThere will be two working dogs on our campus this year: Archie, a fully-trained therapy dog that works with counselor Dan Keane, and Drew Lou, a service dog that accompanies one of our students.

Please read the attached letter for more information on the benefits of therapy dogs and the differences between the work done by service dogs and therapy dogs. It is important to know that Drew Lou wears a red vest, which means "STOP, do NOT pet me," and Archie wears a blue vest, which means "Yes, you can pet me if you want."

If you have any concerns or questions regarding the working dogs on our campus, please email Mr. Keane or Mrs. Halingstad with the subject line "School Dog".

Weekend Food from the 285 Backpack Program

Families interested in receiving a bag of non-perishable food each Friday afternoon to help over the weekend may complete and send in the form or contact counselor Craig Enlund to request enrollment. There are no requirements to qualify for the program. Bags are delivered every Friday throughout the school year, beginning the week after a family enrolls, and the bags are delivered without identifying or singling out recipients.

The family letter and application form can be found at https://tinyurl.com/2019wjmsbackpackprogram

Box Tops for Education

Did you know that Box Tops for Education benefits middle schools? The funds earned from Box Tops turned in at West Jefferson Middle School last year were used to keep the recess equipment cart stocked.

The program is changing to use the new Box Tops app to scan your receipt. Box Tops are still worth 10¢ each for your school. The app will find participating products purchased at any store and instantly add cash to your school's earnings online. Unexpired clipped Box Tops are still being accepted in the collection bucket in the commons outside Mrs. Jessee's window.

Interact seeks supplies to make Activity Bags

Our student service club, Interact, will be making activity bags this fall for sick children at Denver Health. Most of the supplies we need are very inexpensive at this time of year. If you happen to run across some good deals and feel like donating, we could use the following items:

  • 100 boxes 24-count crayons

  • 100 spiral notebooks

  • 200 pencils

  • 100 coloring books

  • 25 4-packs Dollar Tree brand of play dough

  • 14 yards assorted cotton fabric, suitable for young children (no florals please), in cuts of ¾ yard or more

  • 14 yards 45-inch wide muslin or 8 yards 60-inch wide muslin

Please contact digital teacher-librarian Amy Baker with questions or to arrange donations. Thank you.
