"Ripple Effect" world premiere May 8

Good afternoon, West Jeff Middle families. This is your Weekly Wednesday Update for May 1, 2019.

School News

Upcoming Events

Please refer to our May at-a-glance printable page to see the upcoming month's events and activities arranged by week.

Over the past year, our band and orchestra students have had the opportunity to collaborate with professional composer Dr. Mischa Zupko. "Ripple Effect", written specifically by and for our West Jeff Middle music students, will have its world premiere on Wednesday, May 8, 2019 in our school gymnasium. Our eighth grade is hosting a reception after the premiere; volunteers for setup and donations are welcome.

Students, please check your lockers and at home for any library books that might not have made it back to the book return by Thursday, May 9th. There are no fines for late books! Outstanding items do convert to a fine added to the student's fees on June 1st. We can request the fine be removed when a book does come in, but it's easiest to get books returned before the end of the school year.

We have a BOGO book fair at the end of the school year to help families stock up for summer reading - or put away extra books for Jolabokaflod, if you want to squirrel away books for winter - open school hours from Friday, May 10 through Thursday, May 16.

We do not have to make up any time due to the security threat on April 17th, so our last day of school remains Thursday, May 23rd and is an early release day. School dismisses at 11:50 am.

Coni-Con open house event 4-6 pm May 10Coni-Con

It's almost time for Coni-Con, the capstone event for our 6th and 7th grade language arts PBL unit! Students will create and illustrate their own graphic novels, then present their final product during their ELA classes and have the opportunity to participate in an after-school event from 4 – 6 pm on Friday, May 10th.

The after school event will be a place to present final products (graphic novels, poetry, chapter book, passion booths, and extensions), take pictures, see professionals in the field, celebrate work done, and hold a prize ceremony!

Please let your student's ELA teacher know if you are interested in volunteering for the event.

8th Grade Continuation

8th grade Continuation is Thursday, May 23rd. The ceremony will take place at 5:15 pm in the gym with the students-only party taking place in the cafeteria and commons from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.

Volunteer and donation opportunities are available for all West Jeff Middle families that want to contribute funds, goods, or time to help the event go smoothly. Current sixth and seventh grade families are especially welcome to help with event setup so eighth grade families can be present for the Continuation ceremony prior to the students-only party.

Eighth grade families: please complete the 8th Grade Continuation Pictures Form by 9 am on Wednesday, May 15th. The form allows file attachments so you can include a kindergarten photo of your student and, if you would rather not use this year's school photo, a current photo of your student. If you have any questions please contact Heather Swegle at .

Office Reminders

Heelys: Families, please remind your students to refrain from wearing Heelys or similar roller heel shoes to school. They are not allowed due to safety issues.

After School Activities Survey: As a school, we are looking at the possibility of having more variety in after school activities available for students next year. We currently offer sports through the Middle School Sports Program and some after-school clubs organized by staff and community organizations. With this in mind, we are reaching out to gauge interest and feasibility in possibly adding more opportunities for our students. Please complete the survey linked below to share your input.

Community Garden: Are you interested in helping to plan a school garden at West Jeff Middle? We are looking for volunteers to begin planning a school garden for Spring 2020. If you are interested, please email Kate Broyles at

285 Traffic Alert

Families, please be aware that CDOT crews will be performing repairs on several bridges along US 285, resulting in single-lane closures during the day on weekdays through late July. The bridges that will be worked on are at South Turkey Creek Road, Conifer Road, Pleasant Park Road, and Kennedy Gulch Road.
