Weekly Wednesday Update - October 3, 2018
Posted on 10/03/2018
So many ways to help in October!

Good afternoon, West Jeff Middle families. This is your Weekly Wednesday Update for October 3, 2018.

School News

Lockout Status Today

Our school went into lockout status this morning at approximately 10:45 AM at the request of local law enforcement. (There was a non-school-related search of the neighborhood for a suspicious person.) Jeffco Safety and Security responded to the school to assist and provide extra security. The lockout was lifted at approximately 12:43 PM. Students conducted business as usual inside the building during this lockout.

A lockout is called for when there is an issue in the neighborhood, outside of the school, like a wild animal spotted nearby or police activity in the area. During a lockout, students are conducting business as usual inside; it is simply that access in and out of the school is restricted. If you would like more information about the district's emergency procedures, you can review them on the Jeffco Safety and Security page under District Safety Plan and Emergency Procedures.

Student safety is always our top priority, and we will continue to follow district safety procedures in any situation that arises.

Our energy conservation club, Green Team, will be meeting during lunches on October 4th. Bring your lunch and eat in the library!

Fall Spiritwear Sale

The fall spiritwear sale window is now open! Order your West Jeff gear, designed by Denver Athletic, by 11:59 pm on Sunday, October 21st. Orders will be delivered to our school by November 14th.

Safety Reminders

We have had reports of cars speeding along the neighborhood streets. Students do walk to and from school along these roads, so please slow down.

If your student is staying after school, they need to either be with a teacher or stay in the commons area. All students need to be picked up by 3:10 unless they are staying later with a teacher.

As the days are getting colder, please encourage your students to bring a sweatshirt or wear a coat outside. In the morning students remain outside until 7:20 when the bell rings. We also go outside for recess every day, except when there is heavy precipitation or the temperature dips below 20°.

Veterans Day Wall of Remembrance

As part of this year's Veterans' Day celebration, Mr. Cushing's Advise class is creating a "Wall of Remembrance" upon which they are inviting all members of the Conifer community to place pictures of their family members who have served in the military in whatever capacity, and whom have since passed away.

Please include the following with your picture: (1) the honoree’s name, (2) their birth year, and year of death, (3) their branch of service, and (4) any comments, notes, on honors received. Photos will be accepted for the Wall of Remembrance through the end of October.

Go to mrcushing.net/veterans-day.html to download a copy of the Wall of Remembrance template.

Sixth Grade Families: Outdoor Lab Notes

Our sixth grade students are going to Outdoor Lab during the week of October 22nd. If you have not been using the Outdoor Lab grocery card program, the fees for Outdoor Lab are due by October 15, 2018.

Packing List: We are asking families to review the packing list in advance so they have ample time to borrow or buy any items on the list that their student may need. Items may also be borrowed at the Outdoor Lab site once students arrive. The list is on the Outdoor Lab website under the Parents and Students tab. If you have any questions, please reach out to your student's Advise or science teacher.

Sample tree cookie nametagTree Cookies/Tree Discs: We need 250 round pieces of wood that are about 4 inches in diameter and 1/2 inch thick. These will be used as nametags during the week of Outdoor Lab, so they will need a small hole drilled near the edge. If there are questions or if you'd like to see an example, please email Ms. Sjogren or Ms. Buffington.

PTA News

Can you help our Teacher Appreciation Committee provide food and drinks for teachers as they work extra-hard during conferences? We are hosting a pasta bar dinner for teachers on October 4th at 5 PM and a snack buffet that will be set up all afternoon and evening on October 9th.

Our fall 2018 social event is a Glow Dance Party that will take place on Friday, October 5th from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at the school. Admission is $5 and includes snacks and drinks; glow jewelry and airbrush tattoos are available at additional cost. A signed permission slip is required for entry. PTA is providing a DJ, fun decorations, and more - and we can use adult volunteers and donations to help make it a success. If you can help, please use the Fall Dance SignUpGenius to let our event chairs know. Thank you!

On October 11th, we are recognizing our PTA Reflections participants with a reception at 5:30 pm in the library. Our monthly PTA meeting will follow at 6:00 pm, also in the library. There's no pressure to volunteer, just come and check out what's going on.

The next School Store is Friday, October 19. Students can purchase snacks and inexpensive items right after school in the lobby.

Please feel free to reach out to or follow the West Jeff Middle PTA via e-mail, the PTA website, the PTA Facebook page, or join online.
