Penny Wars

Penny Wars 2018

Why are we having penny wars?

Interact clubs at West Jefferson Middle School, Conifer High School, and Fitzsimmons Middle School (in Platte Canyon Schools) chose to raise funds to help build an accessible playground at a school in Kenya through Sasa Harambee, an organization that local Rotarian Carol Carper serves as USA Chair. West Jeff students will raise funds by participating in Penny Wars during lunchtimes from February 22 through March 16, 2018.

How does it work?

There are collection containers labeled for each grade level (6th, 7th, and 8th) available outside the cafeteria during lunch periods. Pennies placed in a container raise a grade level's total; silver coins and bills lower it. The amount correlates to the face value of the item, so a nickel lowers a grade's total by 5 points and five pennies raises a grade's total by 5 points.

What does the winning grade receive?

The grade level with the highest value of points at the end of the day on March 16 will earn an extra recess during Advise on Friday, March 23 supervised by non-teaching staff, so the winning grade's teachers get a break, too.
