Penny Wars

Why did we have penny wars in March 2017?

Interact clubs at West Jefferson Middle School, Conifer High School, and Fitzsimmons Middle School (in Platte Canyon Schools) chose to raise funds to help build an accessible playground at a school in Kenya through Sasa Harambee, an organization that local Rotarian Carol Carper serves as USA Chair. West Jeff students raised funds by participating in Penny Wars during lunchtimes from March 7 through 23.

How did it work?

There were collection containers labeled for each grade level (6th, 7th, and 8th) available outside the cafeteria during lunch periods. Pennies placed in a container raised a grade level's total; silver coins and bills lowered it. The amount correlates to the face value of the item, so a nickel lowered a grade's total by 5 points and five pennies raised a grade's total by 5 points.

Who won? What did they win?

The grade level with the most points at the end of the day on March 23 earned an extra recess during Advise on Friday, March 24 supervised by non-teaching staff, so the winning grade's teachers got a break, too.

At the end of the day on March 23, our standings were:

Eighth grade, -4259 points;
Seventh grade, -9878 points; and
Sixth grade, -10878 points.

A total of $753.98 was raised for the Kenyan playground project. Thank you!
